You don't need to buy everything at once. Here's how to build a smart home incrementally, starting with the moves that give the most value.
Start with plugs, not bulbs
Smart plugs are the lowest-friction entry point. They work with lamps, fans, and any device that doesn't need a dimmer. A good plug costs $10-15, works with Alexa and Google Home, and you can automate it the same day it arrives.
Pick one voice platform and stay with it
Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit don't play well with each other. Mixing them adds complexity without adding value. Pick based on the phone in your pocket (HomeKit for iPhone, Google for Android) unless you have a specific reason to do otherwise.
The second thing to buy
A smart thermostat delivers real savings if you heat or cool your home. Most models pay for themselves in 12-18 months through energy reductions. Installation takes about 30 minutes and doesn't require an electrician for most setups.
What to automate first
"Away" mode is the most useful routine: lights off, thermostat set back, locks engaged (if you have smart locks). This one routine covers the main reason people want a smart home.
